Many people think that there is nothing more to personal safety than carrying a firearm. At Green Mountain Guns we understand that personal safety is all inclusive set of skills and education that you and your family must practice in order to be as safe as possible. Teaching personal safety to your teens as they begin spending more time away from home is especially important, since teenagers are at an age where they can travel about by themselves but they are not yet old enough to have a registered firearm. Here are a few tips that can help ensure your teen stays safe when they are away from home.
Although teenagers are usually all about having a good time when they are away from their parents, it is important that you teach your teens how to be aware of their surroundings even when they are out to have fun. Paying attention to where they are is very important especially if they have not been the one driving to a location. Your teen should know exactly where they are at all times. Names and addresses of who they are with are also important. It is important that they learn names of any new people they are spending time with as well.
Stay In Contact
Cell phones are great safety measure for teens when they are away from their parents. Cell phones which are equipped with GPS tracking devices can give parents the peace of mind of knowing exactly where their kids are at all times. Make sure your teen knows the importance of keeping their phone charged and accessible at all times. Checking in often with their parents is also a great way to cut down on the chances of an unsafe situation transpiring. If your teen changes locations or changes who they are spending time with they should check in with the stats of who they are with and where.
Set up Warning Words
If you check in with your teen and things are not alright, having a warning word in place can help alert you to any kind of danger that your child may be in or may be heading toward. If your child is talking to you but can not explain the situation to you, a warning word can be used to alert you that you should go pick up your child immediately. Warning words should be odd words not used in your everyday conversations that others would not catch on to.
